In the simplest form, Google will search through millions of websites using Google Spiders. It is well a well known fact that when these spiders search they will go from site to site using links.

The orange sites are in one way or another connected to each other with the grey lines representing Google's Spiders paths. If you do not link build your website it will remain like the blue site, on its own, not indexed and performing poorly in Google's search results.
